Norton's web browsing speed

  bellyfunk 21:37 15 Jun 2003

I have (finally)taken the plunge and upgraded to XP. I did a clean install and needed to connect to the internet to get a couple of XP drivers. Wow, web browsing as it should be, fast and no broken links. Installed Norton internet security and anti-virus, back to the bad old days.1mb connection, 128k performance.
Anyone got any speed tweeks for Norton's(apart from turning it off)? NTL cable modem through ethernet.

You really only need AV software enabled for checking/sending e-mails where the real risk of being landed with a virus lies.

I have Norton AV2002 and it is configured in this fashion.

But I do update antivirus definiations at least once a day, which has paid off several times in the last 10 days or so when it has stopped these nasties in their tracks.

I also have the Outlook Express Preview Pane disabled at all times - one of the key causes of setting a virus loose. Even clicking on an e-mail to delete it can set the virus in action if the Preview Pane is active.

Take of the privicy protection and internet content filtering, this speeds up your internet, but leave Firewall and AV on.

Thanks Gents,

The privacy and content filtering has speeded things up a bit. Not too sure about only having NAV check incoming and outgoing e-mail, too chicken to try it!

There's no need to be "chicken" about disabling Norton AV for normal web surfing - it's advice first provided several years ago by my son, who is an IT specialist working for one of the largest employers in the UK.

He's never failed me with any advice on any aspect of computing over many years and I trust him explicitly.
