Noisy dvd writer when recording/playback

  isititis 20:08 08 Aug 2009

I have a HP Pavilion running WinXP SP3 IE8 and have problems with the dvd writer which was already installed when the pc was bought. No discs came with the pc.
When a bought music cd is played, there is noise in the form of clicking. It is random clicking and not very loud, but audible. The cd plays ok in a different player.
When recording music files to a cd, the clicking is present. But when the cd that has just been made is played on a different player, it's ok. No tapping.
The burner is a Sonic DigitalMedia Plus v7 all-in-one type. By that I mean it coppies a disc, then ejects it and asks for a blank cd to copy to. The time it takes to do a copy has slowed right down, too.
Ideas anyone. Thanks in advance.

Drive my be about to fail.

Try a new DVD drive if possible!
