Try opening Device Manager (My Computer>Properties>Device Manager).

Highlight your Scanner (from Imaging Device after clicking on the + sign). There may be a yellow ? mark which will indicate a problem.

Click on Properties and you should see two tabs; one will reveal if the device is working properly and the second will indicate driver status and provide the means to upgrade the driver if required.
