My daughter bought a nearly new Toshiba Satellite laptop from click here about two years ago - it came with the balance of the manufacturer's three year warranty.

After about a year and a half's use the screen packed up and Toshiba met fully the £600 screen replacement and labour charges under the terms of the warranty.

The laptop had only cost £800 in nearly new form, about half its original price.

So in view of the fact that your laptop is a Sony, it could well prove even more expensive to replace the screen...:-(
