No sound on my computer

  [DELETED] 14:55 07 Oct 2007

I was in the middle of listening to music on my computer and th sound cut out completely.
I have no ideas why but I know it's not down to my speakers as I have tried different speaker sets and I know their in the right place on the processor.

I have a Windows XP Home edition, I re-downloaded my soundcard drivers and I've run virus and anti spy scans (not in safe mode). My sound card is recognised by my computer and I have no conflicting audio hardware.

Any suggestions how to re-audioify my computer?

My sound went a while back and I restored to an earlier time when it worked then it was okay. Sometimes with a variety of players you have to reset the player's volumn (even when it's not loaded) as this can control the pc's volumn control too.

No luck with the restore.
I did it to 3 dys ago when egverything was in order but I still have no sound.

Do you have front and rear audio sockets? Tried playing an audio CD and checking what you can hear, as opposed to mp3/WMA etc?

No change.
I cant hear anything on an audio CD through speakers or headphones.

Thanks though, both of you.

do you get the 'beeps' at startup and the windows tune when you start pc up?

if so is the speaker icon on your taskbar (usually right hand side)?

if it is, left click it and make sure there is not a tck in 'mute all'.

Nothing's muted and I dont get those beeps.
Thank you though.

Startup beeps and Windows sounds are provided by different hardware.
Do the DXDiag audio tests.

Start menu/run, type

press return

Click the Test buttons in any/all the Sound tabs

I heard no sounds at all during the tests.
I dont really know what information I'm meant to aquire from that run command so I dont know if it's good or bad.
I'm not massively knowledgeable at computers at all.

I often get the same problem and I find that when I restart my PC, the sound comes back on.

Soundcard or on-board sound? Can you try a different card?
