No Sound

My PC in the study has developed a sound problem. I can play CD's ok but can't play anything stored on the hard drive. It says either a sound card isn't installed or there is a fault with the card fitted. I've been onto the Microsoft Windows Media player site and followed their suggestions but no joy. When I go into Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices it says there is no Audio device. When I click on Audio all the boxes say no device. I also tried reloading the sound drivers from the motherboard CD but that hasn't seemed to work.
Should I just go out and but a new card and fit it? I've only got the one fitted as part of the motherboard
