My friend uses XP and at present, instead of receiving images in his e-mails, he gets a red XAnd when I receive an e-mail from him, my inbox displays an attachment icon but there is not an attachment and he had not sent one.
Tools>Internet Options>Advanced.Enable the relevant boxes.
That's for IE - in OE Tools>Options>Security tab tick relevant boxes for required service(s) such as "Do not save or open attachments that may potentially....".
