On boot-up after windows display I do not get any icon`s / start menu bar. The start-up music play`s, after that all I am left with is my mouse icon, I can move the mouse, right click nothing happends,pressing ctrl alt del,brings up only two programs,(norton protect,csinject)have run norton`s rescue disk`s but came up blank!Going into safe mode the same as above.My -PC Win 98se amd athlonxp 2400,Jetway 867as with on board sound,256ddr mb,Radeon 7000agp (dual display,Realtek ethernet nic.you can join in if you like.
This may be pointless butTry moving the pointer to the bottom of the screen The taskbar may be set to autohide.
The taskbar can also be moves to the top, bottom, LHS or RHS of the screen

On the assumption that this has not always happened:Start, Run, Type inSFC /SCANNOWAnd click OK. Have your Windows disk to hand.

Yes I think you're probably right.To do this you need to ensure that your CDROM is set as the first boot device. To do this you need to (typically) press DEL at startup but different 'puters require different keys click hereHaving done that bung the W98 disk in the drive and reboot. This should allow you to reinstall Windows over itself and leave your data and programs intact.
Installed win98 again, got my icon`s back, running test`s on my system now,thanks you for help.
