No dial tone

My neighbour across the road has a laptop Compaq Evo 400c.

It has been working fine for a couple of years now.

She has now told me that she cannot access the internet because of the message "no dial tone"

She is running Win 2000 and her ISP is Tiscali on dial-up.

I have the laptop with me now and have checked everything I can with no problems.

Unfortunately, I can't check the internet connection because I am on NTL cable phone and when I try to connect (on her laptop) I get the same error. That is: "no dial tone".

I did a search of the Forum for "no dial tone" but none of the results was the answer.

I have never used NTL or cable, but normally the no dial tone message when using ADSL is because in Internet Explorer Tools>Internet Options>Connections ... Never dial a connection - is NOT checked.

Easy way is delete the Connection and create a new one with the user data like Phone number for ISP user name and password

On Dial-Up

Yes I know - but I understood pj123 is/was trying to connect neighbours laptop to his own set-up.

Integrated or on a plug in card?[PCIMA}
Seems like with a software failure
In which case - Control Panel Network Connection and make new connection
Or a Hardware failure - replace card or if integrated - the whole computer.

Dial-Up and ADSL use two different modems

As I said take it back across the road and do what I said above for Dial-Up connection

Hmm, has your neighbour tried a System Restore back to when it was working??

Modem may have packed in, or a duff cable. I have also seen them trying to connect without it connected to the BT socket

Have you ran a diagnostic check on the modem through Windows?
If not, do this
Open Device Manager and expand Modems
Select your modem right click on it and select Properties
Click the Diagnostic tab
Click Query modem
If there is a problem with it Windows will give you an error

Don't know about a laptop, but my desktop began to play up rather seriously, with error messages including a regular 'No Dial Tone'. If I pressed connect, then I usually got it working again. Tiscali sent me a new router, never had any connection problems since.
