no dial up after virus

  boon_intheuk 09:23 23 May 2005

My friends computer suddenly would not dial up, no dial tone then error message says check modem or phone line, both are seemingly OK.
His AVG antivirus then told him he had a trojan horse called "dialer av21", AVG "fixed" it, but he still cannot connect to the internet?
Control panel - modems - properties can communicate with the modem which would indicate the modem is not dead. Don't know if there is a connection between virus or just coincidence.
Any ideas anyone?

Running Windows ME
AVG Personal free(Up to date)

The second link has an automatic Winsock fix and the first shows you haow to do it using the Windows installation disc.

Why you need to do it........Many dialers overwrite the official Winsock.dll file with there own version. When something like AVG or Adaware remove the malware they often delete this modified Winsock.dll file. This leaves you unable to connect to the internet.Try the fix in the second link and see if it helps.

In addition to Gundalf's valuable advice try this
Go to Control Panel/ Network connections/Make new connection and set up a new one.

If you take a peek at the details of the existing one like as not you will find it corrupt.
