'No CD in drive' error

  Chrissib 17:40 27 Apr 2010

Hi, I am trying to create an audio CD using the same method as always, on numerous occasions, but now my CD recorder drive keeps reporting no CD in drive. I can play CD's and run programs from data CD's, but several 'Burn' programs report the same thing. Tried Windows Media Player, Nero and others.... all report the same, with several blank disks.

This seems to be the case since loading some training discs, and logical drives were created on my PC, although this may be a coincedence.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bad batch of burning discs? Try some others.

Possibly a dirty laser head and your drive needs cleaning.

Hi, thanks for your responses...

Cant be a faulty batch as tried various blank disks and used one to record on another PC without any problems...

Drive IS recognised by XP that it is recordable in 'properties', but tried editing registry anyway. Followed instructions on link, still reads disks ok, but still wont recognise a blank disc.

Will play or read any data disk, but still reports 'No disc in drive' when I put a blank one in for burning. Can you think of anything else?

Could be a loose / damaged data cable or burn laser dead.

ok, short of taking the PC apart, is their any way I can test the capability of the drive itself, without the need for operating in the Windows environment, to determine if it is a basic hardware problem. Some kind of diagnostic I can run maybe?

A new DVD-RW drive is less than £20 its not worth messing around that much.

To check the cables and or swap cable from another drive is very easy. click here

without the need for operating in the Windows environment,

if your machine will boot from a USB stick the make a bootable linux click here

see if it will burn when run from linux
