New hard drive in old computer ???

  luddite64 19:46 29 Dec 2007

Help. Treated the old Compaq Ap550 to a new 160Gb hard drive. Xmas present. Compounded the prob. with a new DVD r/w. Ripped comp. apart. Horror!! Ribbon cables don't fit. First thouht it was just a male /female thing, then realised cable sockets were 72 pin and new H/D and DVD r.w were 40 pin. Is there a solution ? Luddite 64

Is your pc one of these professional workstations?

If so it appears to be designed with SCSI drives in mind.

Something like this ATA 133 with RAID PCI plug in card (2nd one down) click here would allow you to connect your IDE hard drive and DVD drive via one of the PCI expansion slots on the motherboard.

It is supposed to come with " Ultra ATA/66 controllers " click here

So you should be able to use an IDE ribbon cable. You might need software for the hard drive to be seen.

manual see hard drive installation talks about Ultra ATA 80 wire cables.

has yours not got an IDE socket on the moterboard perhaps all you need is a cable.

Chapter 6 of the manual linked to by Fruit Bat /\0/\ has an illustration of the motherboard showing 2 IDE sockets.

You'll find all the instructions you need to access the pc too.

Assuming that it's the same as the motherboard in your pc that is.
