New external drive not showing in My Computer

  trainman2 18:31 14 Mar 2010

I recently bought a 1TB Seagate external drive and have connected this to my computer (Wndows XP) via USB. The drive is recognised in disk management as Disk 1 Expansion Drive (I've assigned it the letter G) - Healthy (Active) and has a blue bar indicating that it is formatted.

Unfortunately the drive is not showing up in My Computer, although it appears to be working and its green light is on. If I turn off my computer then open Disk Management next time I switch on I find that the drive does not now have a letter assigned.

I would be grateful if you could tell me how to access the drive.

Many thanks for your help.

I would try re-formatting it.

Bear in mind to format 1TB can take about 14 hours.

looks like an overnight format, never owned a drive that big,

Healthy (Active) means that the drive is bootable - same as Healthy (System) your C: drive

I would reformat the external drive as easiest way to sort it out
