New devices not working through USB

  Kilty 17:05 11 Jul 2008

Ive bought a new ipod and a new camera in the last 12 months, when I plug either into my PC, nothing happens. I am able to use older equipment through the USBs (i.e. Skype phone, old camera, basic MP3 player), could this be because the new items are USB2 plugs and I only have USB1.1 sockets?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, some usb2 devices may work via usb1 but at a reduced speed - other usb2 devices will only work with usb2 ports. A PCI usb card with 4 usb ports on it is very cheap and easy to fit as long as you have a spare PCI slot in your pc.

Your devices should work but at the lower speed.

If your running XP they should plug and play if win 98ME etc then you will need the appropriate drivers.

If XP try
Refresh USB Ports
Use Drive clean up to remove USB device drive info from the registry
In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB,
reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.
Your equipment should now be recognised.
