do you need to have a NIC or even 2 if you want to set up a small LAN using 2 computers not connected to the interneti would think that all you need is the cable and then plugthisinto the ethernet sockets in both computers although im not sure as i have never set up any kind of network before
any advice would be great

For just 2 PCs you can connect them with an ethernet cable so long as it is a 'crossover' cable. click here

For a peer to peer network all that is needed are a network card in each PC and a crossover network cable , that's the easiest way , or a little harder is to have two wireless network cards and no cable and an Ad Hoc network .

what is a crossover cable and how much for one about a meter in length

click here for an example. You'll probably be able to pick one up from your local PC World or other local computer shop.

A crossover cable is a cat5 cable with different pinouts to enable two PC's to talk to each other without a router in between .
