networking 2 computers

Hi I would like to connect my laptop to the desktop so as to share the 1 modem.

I have a PCI modem card on the desktop.
Can I just plug the line from the wall into the LAN socket i also have, instead of into the modem its self as it is now, and the out from the lan into the laptop.
Or is it not this simple.

Not that simple if you have a lan on the laptop you need a crossover lead then connect the 2 via the lan sockets and run the network wizard if you are running xp and follow instruction (ps there is a new network forum on this site now)

Much said on this subject in past PCA mags.
Wealth of advice has been given so search your old copies or refer yourself to the "Back Issues" CD of PCA.

You will also need a PCMCIA LAN card for the laptop if it does not have LAN built in, then connect the two with the crossover cable suggested above by Strawballs. After that you will need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PC.
