Depends on what your using to connect. Is it dial up? Check the network connections icon in control panel. If you want to know your IP then from start go to run and type cmd, in the DOS box that appears type ipconfig /all this will tell you how you connect to the Internet.

There are programs called ping and tracert as well that will tell you how long it takes for your machine to connect to the servers on the net.

Start run type cmd the in the box type ping followed by aol.com or msn.com etc.

Tracert does the same thing, however unless you know what your looking for it will not mean much.
