Network connections between NT and XP Pro

I have a number of Windows XP Pro PC's and laptops which connect to several NT 4 servers over our LAN and through dial up PSTN/ISDN. Any drives I map to on an NT machine are extremely slow and sometimes don't open at all. Any ideas of how to speed this up?

A bit of investigation require I think, look at the processes that are going on to see which is taking up too much usage.
