Network 2 PCs to Share Cable Modem

Are there any clear "how to" guides readily available (especially on the internet) on networking 2 PCs together to share a cable modem access to the internet, as well as files and printers?
My PCs (one using Windows XP, the other W-98)both have LAN cards fitted, and I have a cross-over cable. However, my one attempt at networking the two PCs was pretty disastrous, and there was certainly no way they could both access the cable modem.
Easy to understand guidance would be very much appreciated.
