Need greater range

  erik the fish 21:10 11 Aug 2008

My living room is at the opposite end of the building to my office where my wireless router is located. There are 5 walls between them and I am unable to stay connected to my network on my laptop. I thought that upgrading from 802.11g to 802.11n would solve the problem but it is no better. I would prefer not to move the router. Is there anything I could use to boost the signal strength?

5 walls is a big ask to expect 802.11g to cope with.

You cannot boost the signal strength but you could extend the range by using a suitable signal repeater that is compatible with your router.

Look at these options

If your router antenna can be removed look at replacing with a hi gain antenna plus a Hi-Gain™

Wireless-G Range Extender in areas with a low wireless signal

Hi-Gain™ 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking HWUR54G Hi-Gain Wireless-G Range Extender

You have to upgrade the firmware in the Hi-Gain™ Wireless-G Range Extender to get the max range

Download the Users Manual and the Quick Installation Guide and take a read

You can use multiple range extenders to extend the wireless signal
