Name of images for SEO

Does naming your images help you at all re: SEO? I know that ALT tags are more for useability, but if I actually name an image 'mykeyword.jpg' will Google take any notice?

Or will it just return that result in a Google image search?

Naming pictures is good practice anyway as Google pics up pictures in search. Google will also count the words as part of a package of ranked words within your page but its likely to be as important as anchor text, links back, above fold copy etc.
