  Stressed Mum 22:27 14 Apr 2009

Windows XP. Dell dimension 5150. The power to my pc was just switched off accidentally and my pc simply will not boot up. Keep getting blue screen saying 'unmountable boot volume' If i press F8 and start from last good known I go back to same error screen. What to do?

Sounds like a problem with the hard drive. Unplug take the side off and check all the plugs are properly in on the hard drive.

ok - done that - checked inside but nothing appears amiss. Started pc again - same thing - same error screen.

and reboot (make sure that your CD player is the first boot device).

Let it boot from the CD and then when asked select repair installation (rather than install operating system).

Once in to recovery console run checkdisk. If faced with a DOS window type:

chkdsk /r

Hopefully your problem is a little corrupted data on the hard drive and chkdsk will repair it. If not the power outage may have killed your drive.

how to i make sure my cd player is the first boot device?

Go in to BIOS. Press Del just as your PC is booting (it will give you a prompt on screen).

One of the settings in there will give you the boot device order.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

most Dell PC's are set as default for the CD player to be first boot device though

  Stressed Mum 23:09 14 Apr 2009

Sorry - I'm completely lost. How do I go into BIOS? Don't have a DEL key
