I have just replaced my BT USB ADSL Modem with a Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem Router. I have three PC's connected - 2 running XP and one running Win 98SE. The XP PC's are fine - connecting to internet and file sharing. The 98SE PC will connect to the internet but whilst it can be seen on the other PC's under view my workgroup computers when you click on properties you get message "Ibm242 could not be found on the network"!!!!

On the IBM I have the following network components installed:-

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adapter
NETGEAR fa311/FA312 pci ADAPTER
TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP NETGEAR FA311/FA312 PCI Adapter
file and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

The NETGEAR ADAPTER has been setup exactly per the instructions given by the DG834 manual.

*** HELP!!!! -- anyone??

In Windows 98's Network properties, there is a "File and Printer Sharing" button below the window that shows the adapters, protocols etc. Have you ticked file sharing and, if appropriate, the printer sharing in that box?

Can the XP PCs ping the IP address of the 98SE PC?

Has any firewall software been configured to allow access to the 98SE PC's IP address?

Have you actually "shared" at least one folder in the Win 98SE PC?

Cheers mgmcc!

It appears that it was an old Zone Alarm Firewall that I had forgotten was installed on the old IBM PC!

Thanks for your help!
