MSN Messenger - Is there a secure alternative

I use messenger on a regular basis including at work. My IT manager is not keen on me using it because of security flaws. Is there an alternative that is more secure.

In a Messenger is as secure as it gets.

You can have secure communication between a PC and a server - that happens all the time with online shops - and you can have secure communication between individuals using the same LAN or WAN, provided you have the appropriate software. If you want to exchange messages with other people using ordinary PCs via the internet however, there's nothing more secure than MS Messenger.

It sounds to me as if you have a pretty good IT manager there by the way.
