My friend reports that his entire collection of MP3 files, through no action of his, have been renamed 'Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire001" 002, 003 and so on. This song is one of the 600 mp3s he has. The files still have their original content, tags and play properly.
Anyone know if a worm/virus caused this? Does any of the tagging programs with batch-rename the files from the tags?
Has he done any tag editing ? Some of the utilities available offer mass editing and he could have done it in error ? What's the date stamp on the files ?
If he uses XP and selects all of his files and renames as Billy Joel - We Didn't Start The Fire, then XP will rename all the selected files and add an 01, 02, 03 etc to each filename. This is by design. Therefore, it is most likely that he has accidentally selected all the MP3s in the folder, rather than the one he intended to.
There are many batch MP3 re-namers available, but if he downloads MusicMatch from musicmatch.com, this will allow the automatic renaming of his MP3s from the ID3 tags, as well as being a very good library / organiser / player / ripping program.
The free version is fine, but it is worth paying the small fee for the extra features of the registered version.
Note that any renaming program can only be as good as the original tagging applied to each track.
