Moving hard drive from old to new computer

The question says it all could you keep it as simple as possible

Depends on how you want to do it. What do you have in mind?

What operating system is installed on the old drive?

The drivers for the motherboard may not work in the new PC and it may not boot.

Anti static procedures (ground yourself
1. Switch off and unplug old PC, remove covers.

2. Disconnect HDD IDE and power cables

3. Unscrew the 4 mounting screws (may be mounted in a cradle depending on make) and withdraw HDD

4. New PC unplugged remove covers

5. insert drive and fix with screws

6. connect IDE and power cables

7 refit covers

8 connect and boot PC

9. Enter Bios (Del/F2 /esc depending on make) set HDD drive detection to Auto

10 reboot into safe mode (F8)

11 remove motherboard drivers

12 install new drivers from CD that came with new PC

13 reboot

14 POST back here if any problems and to let us know if it worked OK.

I repeat, it depends on what you have in mind.

If the new PC has no hard drive and no OS then before you switch the old one off and do as described above it would be better to remove all drivers - sound, graphics, network, and then the chipset drivers. When it asks you to reboot each time say no, continue to remove drivers and when finished just turn off. Fit old drive in new PC, install mobo and all other drivers as windows prompts you to do so.

If new PC has a hard drive and windows installed, do you want the old drive (and the old windows) to be in charge or will you use the new windows on the new drive? This will effect the master / slave settings you choose.

Again, what are you trying to achieve.

If you just want to see all your files on the drive, First set the Jumper on the Drive to SL for slave then Connect the Ribbon cable from the other Hard Drive there should be a spare plug on the cable the red tracer wire goes toward the Power plug that as four wires also connect one of the spare Power plug wires this only goes one way round if you check the plug.

PS all the above should be done with the computer switched of and the power plug from the wall socket
