Mouse Problem - Please help

Hello.

My brother currently runs a pretty low spec custom built PC (about five years old now) running windows 98.

He currently only has a serial mouse port at the back of his PC, and up to now has been using a serial mouse even though he has a serial / ps2 adaptor installed.

We just purchased a usb and ps2 compatible mouse from Belkin, as the serial mouse was very jerky, and after connecting it to the back of his PC using the serial / ps2 adaptor we booted up windows 98.

Before the login screen appears we get an error message saying that a mouse was not detected.

After pressing enter we are met with our login screen, and after entering the windows desktop I immediately checked out the system properties (using only keyboard).

Under his mouse in Device Manager we get an yellow exclamation mark with the words "Wheel Mouse Serial Mouse".

How do I resolve this issue and get the PS2 mouse to work on his system?

Thanks in advance,

Do you have a driver disk for the new mouse? You may need to install the driver before plugging in the mouse.

Can you try the new mouse on another PC?

Installed the relevant drivers for the new mouse and checked it out on my PC, no problems.

I might have to stick with a serial mouse for my brother *sigh*

Thanks for all your help,

Currently checking all settings on my bro's computer in device manager...so far no luck.

I may just have to buy a serial mouse.

I'll keep you posted if there is any progress.

Thanks again for all your help,
