OK guys here goes
i have build a pc using the parts from 1 dodgy pc & the dead one.
now the pc boots up but i have no mouse.
the mouse icon is in the control panel but under device manager there is no mouse.

can anyone help me find my little wee micky

using windows ME

i have plugged in another hard drive & the mouse works fine so i think i can safely say it is not a hardware problem

Re-install your mouse drivers and check that there aren't any hardware conflicts.

Is the keyboard working ok?

And also, post here the make and model of the mouse you are using. You may need to download the correct software for it.

yes the keyboard is working fine
the mouse is a genius optical mouse but i tried an old genius mouse (one with the ball in) & nothing from that. as far as i can tell there are no drivers installed except for the standards windows drivers

Is this a PS2 mouse or a USB model?

PS2 ports are fitted with a non-repairable fuse so if that is blown, it may explain the effect you are getting.

If you have a USB port, try a USB mouse.

its a ps2 mouse but if i put another hard drive in the same pc the mouse works so i don't think its a hardware issue

So the 2nd hard drive has ME installed? So it has to be a driver issue. Try Add Hardware Wizard in Control Panel.

  mad1234 08:42 28 Sep 2006

yes the 2nd hard drive has ME installed
i will try add hardware & let you know if it works

  mad1234 09:13 28 Sep 2006

add new hardware has detected the mouse
without the mouse to pick with how do you click on the dot next to "yes my device is in the list" then to pick which device you want to install?

Try the arrow keys and Enter.
