A friend is running win xp and has jus experienced a frustrating problem.
boot up takes a long time showing the barcode type display at the bottom of the screen slowly progessing for up to 5/10 ins. When ths has completed the mouse and keyboaurd are not working.
any ideas?

has it only just started slowing that much down at the same time ur Keyboards and mouse stop working?

  evalesco 20:20 21 Jul 2007

What do you mean the barcode type display at the bottom of the screen?

Also is this a PC or a Laptop?

  Fungus 20:28 21 Jul 2007

apparently these problems hapend at te same time an its a desktop pc.
The barcode thing i think is something that appears at the bottom of the screen it is a sort of count down display

No, if they are related then i have no idea what it is, but independantly the slow down could be caused by a virus, and so could the keyboard and mouse failure for that matter, try booting in safe mode by repeatedly pressing F8 at start up before the XP Boot screen. Keyboard and mouse problem could be fault PS/2 ports, try a USB one in that case.

F8 allows boot in safe mode but still no keyboard or mouse.
is there an anti virus detection programme that can be loaded onto cd then run at boot up?

Sounds like he as gone into hibernate not turned the computer off. tell him her to turn the computer off with the Start button on Desktop

when the "barcode" is running this is when XP is loading drivers.

A corrupt driver would cause the slow boot into windows and the keyboard and mouse problems.

What sort of keyboard / mouse PS2 or USB try plugging in a different keyboard (USB instead of PS2) if it works then uninstall the appropriate drivers in device manager and reboot the PC. Let XP find and instal new hardware then switch off again and retry the original keyboard.

how can he do that if the keyboard does not work?

The "bar code" usually appears if you are booting up from Hibernate mode (don't use Standby, so not sure if it applies equally).
