..just built desk top pc using asus PVP800SE motherboard. Old monitor from former pc has 15 pin connector and new motherboard doesn't have compatible socket. Can I get a joining lead to hook up to 9 pin connection on motherboard?

"new motherboard doesn't have compatible socket"

Depends what it DOES have?

Does it have one board graphics? If not you need a graphics card.

If it's a Asus P5P800 Intel 865PE (LGA775) Motherboard then i can't see it has onboard graphcis and needs a seperate graphics card.
