Modem firmware

I've had a spot of bother with my internet connection of late so thought I'd try a firmware upgrade of my D-Link300T.
I just don't know how to do it.
I've downloaded the firmware file from the D-Link website but it's not recognised by the pc, so how do I get it on my modem?

Can you kindly link us to the file you actually downloaded so we know you have the correct thing?

I checked that out too, but I don't know where to start with it.

"Enter Main Menu through RS-232 port of DI-300(M) using Terminal Emulator"

I don't even understand the first line...........

Use the IP address as per the instruction manual to access the modem as if you were to set it up.

RS-232 port - The port to access it

DI300 the name of the modem

Terminal Emulator - in most cases the webbrowser.

I'm in and I've found the place I should be.

Thanks for your help,
