modem drivers - need to reinstall on each boot up

I have Windows xp with sp2, avg antivirus (free ed.), zone alarm (free ed.)I use windows automatic update. Since 24th dec 04, every time I boot up the pc I have to reinstall the modem drivers from disc before I can get online. Windows automatic update tries to install an update but fails, with the message "Updates were unable to be successfully installed" then "Motorola Inc. - Networking - Motorola SURFboard 4200 USB CABLE MODEM".

and select the 'custom install' option. Let trhe site find the modem driver that Microsoft is offering you (it will be in Optional hardware updates) and tick the box to hide that particular download.

Exit the download site.

Now reinstall your original driver and all should be well - your computer will stop trying to download the driver that's causing the problem.
