Missing System32

  Ponkin 02:39 14 Mar 2003

After System Restore with Win XP,then trying to load a CD Rom the system crashed and the following message appeared. "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair"

After inserting the recovery CD Rom and hitting the 'r' the screen flashes a couple of times then reverts to the above message.Restarting, switching off/on again still produce the same message.
Any Ideas out there please.

click here quite a few people seem to have had this problem, and the most suggested way is a complete reinstall, but please read for your self and then you can decide. J.

When the computer is starting keep tapping the F8 key...

Then you'll be given some options, select...

"Last known good configuration"

See if that helps.

Also take a look at click here

Have you set the CD ROM to be booted from. If it does not it will not look at the CD ROM drive for a bootable disc.

You need to access the BIOS of the computer to change the BOOT sequence, in other words telling the computer to look at the CD ROM so you can fix the problem.

Press DELETE a few time when your computer is starting. You will now be in the BIOS. Be careful and only change what needs changing. You need to set the BOOT sequence too look at the CD ROM...Have a look in all the menus for this and just change it. Read the motherboard manual on how to this. If no manual what is the motherborad? We'll find out how to do it and then tell you.

If you manage to make the change. Then it should look at the CD ROM and then you can do a repair.

IF it does not...and you are sure you have the BOOT sequence set to look at the CD ROM drive. It might be the CD is damaged or the CD drive is damaged.
