missing system file

My Win2k laptop won't boot because is says the system file /WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEMced is missing. How can I copy this from the Win2k CDROM?

I am running Win2k, the response may work for WinXP, but in my case I get "file not found" error.

If I could get into setup at boot time and fix it to boot from the CD drive, perhaps could just boot up from the Win2k setup CD and use MSDOS commands to restore the file to the right directory. I have tried it holding down "delete", F4 and F8 but none of these get me into DOS Setup.

That could work if knew how to find it among the CAB files and how to extract it and copy it.

Sorry mis-read 2k as XP

Can you clarify the exact message "/WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEMced "

When I try to boot into Win2k the following appears on the screen:

"Win 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced startup options for Windows 2000, press F8."

Pressing F8 does nothing.
