A friend of mine in having a problem with word

When he tries to open word he gets a fatal exception error. Blue screen, and it says he hasn't got enough memory.

He's put some more memory in , no difference.

everything else works fine, just can't open word.

He's using Windows ME

Any Ideas anybody

Search your hard drive for a file called


rename it to OLDNORMAL.DOT

start Word again.

Sorry by way of explanation. For some reason Word makes the occasion change to the NORMAL.DOT file. Even when it doesn't need to. Eventually the file become huge and corrupt. Renaming or deleting it solves this problem because if Word can't find it it generates a new copy!!!!!!

There are 3 or 4 other symptoms of a corrupt NORMAL.DOT file...

Tried to find the NORMAL.DOT file on my PC and it comes up blank?

I'm using XP PRO though.

You need to enable searching for hidden files and folders.

If yoou have Word you definitely have
