microsoft messenger has encountered a problem

I keep getting a popup saying messenger has encountered a problem and has to close - blah, blah, send error report, blah blah.

I'm using xp home and don't use messenger, although I've never tried to remove it.

How do I get rid of this annoying message which pops up every 30 seconds or so.

You just need to switch off Windows Messenger, which serves no useful purpose anyway, at the Control Panel. I asked the same question on 23.06.03 "Grey Messenger Pop-ups", and Jester2K II and Sir Radfordin quickly put me straight!

To remove Windows Messenger, Start, Run, enter

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

and click OK.

All sorted now, thanks for the advice.
