Microsoft Generic Host firewall intruder ?

  [DELETED] 23:04 01 Oct 2003

Every few hours I get a Norton firewall message saying that a 'Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services' has attempted to gain access to my computer.
Norton recommends that I permit this.
The implication in Norton's first window is that this is an incoming intrusion.
When I look at the 'details' the implication is that it was outward bound.
I have Windows XP Pro automatic update functioning.
Is it something to do with this ?
So far I have permitted the first few and am now blocking entry.
I'd be grateful for your advice,

Needed to access some sites. Mine is set to automatic in Norton and causes no problems.

which acts as a host for other processes running from DLLs. Depending on the configuration of your system there may be more than one instance of SVCHOST showing in the Task List.

You should allow the Internet access, this process is part of the operating system - no harm will come of it.

Many thanks for your responses. I'll 'permit' from now on. I guess this post is closed. Cheers, xquest
