Messenger Service message re Spy and Adware

  Trikie 13:22 22 Nov 2004

On logging on I get a pop up from Messenger Service that a buffer over run makes me liable to spy and adware. It suggests using to protect it. Is this a genuine message?

turn off the messaging service, then see if you still get the message ?.

Windows 2000 and XP:- Go Start > Run > type in services.msc.
Double-click on Messenger and in the Messenger Properties window, select Stop, then choose Disable as the Startup Type.Click OK.

Windows 95, 98, and ME:- Go to Control Panel and Add/Remove.Select Windows Setup.Select System Tools.Click Details.Uncheck WinPopUp.Click OK.

No. From start and run type msconfig, hit the startup tab, is there a ref to XP FIX there? If so untick it and get adaware from

Further to Joe's post. You can remove messenger all together by typing this into run

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Thanks both. I ran AdAware yesterday - the message came up before and has come up since but XP-Fix is not on msconfig.

I've followed JoeC's advice so hopefully it won't appear again.
