Memory/BIOS upgrade

I am upgrading memory on my old PC. Having read forum threads and after Crucial scan I can identify the correct upgrade. My questions are:

1) The max for my CPU is 512 MB Windows Me (I have only 128MB at present) Can I add just 256MB to the empty slot or should I upgrade the existing one also?

2) A diagnostic tool suggests a new BIOS as the PC is fairly old. Is this necessary as part of the memory upgrade and would I notice the benefit ?

I don't use the PC for games or videos but it is slow in Startup and if I have too many things going at the same time.

you can just add memory, if pc is working ok leave bios alone. memory will speed up pc.
