memory failing?

what are the symtoms of the memory failing? I suspect my mem stick - it is a pc2100 256 mb unbranded stick in a jetway 866 mobo and amd 1700+, and the system freezes two or three times during boot up, then seems to run fine for a couple of hours. Ive tried a format and clean install, but lockups can happen at anytime, even using office not just during a game. I have win98 se and directx 9 and the latrest drivers for my hardware. has anyone had similar problems and solved it with new memory?
