I bought a 256DDR memory stick and put it in my PC. Result a beeping. On reading through the manual I found that the m/board is designed for SDR memory.
Later a neighbour installed it in his - which does require DDR and his PC refused to start.
My question is:- would the installation of that memory on a m/board designed for SDR have damaged it?

Not usually, but it may have done in this case.

If your neighbour was able to plug it in without being brutal, the non-start my have been due to a number of things. Which slot he used for which stick (it can be critical), and more likely did he disturb something else while inside the box.

It is just possible that the stick was u/s.
