Media Player and "no suitable decompressor"

  Neill 21:42 15 Oct 2003

Friend has just emailed asking my advice so I'm asking yours! Double clicks an AVI file in Windows 98, Windows Media Player version loads but then she is told "Cannot play back the video stream, no suitable decompressor could be found".
Any suggestions? Thanks

you are missing a codec thats all. just find out which codec it is. Things like the MPEG2 codec are not included as they are not free.

Is one minute a record for a reply? I'll have to go round to her house and try out all that was said on the Microsoft web site, thanks.

But how do I find which codec is missing. Sorry to be thick.
