media player licenses corrupted

  carvers 18:00 18 Jan 2004

I have a compaq presario laptop which came preinstalled with xp home and was supplied with relevent restore discs. i have tried to play my windows media player which brings up an error saying the licenses for your media player are corrupted. a visit to microsoft site informs me that i need to upgrade to media player 9. i have tried this before from a magazine supplied disc but the media player was constantly trying to connect me to the internet so i reverted back to my supplied media player which was working fine. is there a way round this problem. as yet have not tried anything so am hoping someone has come across this before. my laptop was 1 year old in december 2003. do these licenses run out? i am a fairly novice user so any help appreciated.
