'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt’. The subject is the file that is missing. I have ‘stand alone copy of XP Pro so is it possible to do as the error report says ‘Please reinstall a copy of the above file’. Nothing else works, F8, Repair etc.
Thank you
Ps and not lose all my data??

I get to the list after typing ‘bootcfg’ but none of the commands are accepted, obviously I tried with ‘rebuild’. Would saying yes to ‘bootfix’ do it??
Thank you for getting me this far anyway :)

If you have the proper Windows XP pro Disc you can go to ,Start, Run, Type in sfc /scannow a little gap between the sfc and forward slash,You may be asked to enter the XP disc,Just let it run if there are no problems it will dissapear ,Just take your disc out then,Any corrupt files it should fix.

Boot with the XP CD to the recovery consul
At the c:\windows prompt
Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
Press Y and enter to overwrite the file.

Type exit to reboot the PCand see if it will start normally.

Ty buteman, I am glad you noticed your senior moment :-)
And ty Fruit Bat. I tried and got ‘The system cannot find the file or directory specified’. I have notice just as the ‘press any key to boot from cd’, just above it says ‘Boot from Atapi’, under that ‘no emulation', can’ be right surely. Floppy is disabled so the d drive is the first it sees.
Getting to thinking its going have to be a format, arggg

What I should have said is

where d: is your CD drive.

try again replaceing d with the letter of your CD drive.

  dlguk 20:44 29 Mar 2007

It is d:, I figured thats what you meant.
