Might have a corrupt file/registry entry somewhere. Maybe try running the system file checker by clicking on Start, Run and entering sfc /scannow This will check to see if any files have changed and might well need a Windows XP CD to restore files.
You certainly know your stuff mate,however I think I had more than 1 issue to resolve.I decided to do a System Recovery.Am I correct in assuming that if i use anything from my backed up files then i could corrupt my laptop again.
