Lost file associations

  Gav5 09:45 02 Nov 2009

Hi folks,

I need some help with this one - My uncle's computer has lost all it's file associations. All the icons have turned white and don't work anymore. We can't open word or excell from the program files of shortcuts. System resore won't respond, the checkbox to disable it is empty but there are no options to open or restore to a previous date.
He thinks he may have deleted something important !!
Also, possibly unrelated - if we type in 'microsoft' for example in google and select microsoft.com from the results, we get directed to amazon or ask jeeves. every time.

Any suggestions appreciated

Try this, if it will let you...
Click on 'My Computer'
Right click C: (your OS drive)
In menu click 'Properties'
Click the 'Tools' tab
Under 'Error Checking' click 'Check Now'
click the box next to...
'Automatically Fix File System Errors'
Click 'Start'
A notice will say it can't do it until the next time you boot. Click 'Yes' and reboot

If it is, and he has a full WinXP disc at hand. Try the following...

Thanks Graphicool,

Sorry, should have mentioned - it's XP pro.

He's already got RegCure installed, after it went wrong. Doesn't fix the issue.

I'll get him to try the first suggestion and check if he's got the XP discs.
