Lost email upgrading from Win 98 to XP home ed

  terrymag 13:56 27 Sep 2005

I have upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows xp home edition and did not backup my email.
Have I now lost them all or do they get stored on my hard drive, if so where should I look and how can I get them reinstalled.
Can anyone point me me in the right direction

I think it is hard cheddar. It is a long time ago I tried to reclaim my emails after upgrading. I failed then. It may be possible if you have retained win 98 intact in a separate folder/partition. Normally most people use the NTFS for XP when upgrading. It is faster & slicker than FAT32 but if you have win XPHome in Fat32 there may just be a chance. What happens is NTFS formats all data except the tiny partition for your original win 98 which you must keep or when you re install it happens XP will fail to install asking for ntldr which is on your win 98 but not necessarily on the upgrade version of XPHome

Hi terrymag. If you reformatted the drive to upgrade, then all will almost certainly be lost. Have a look for files such as Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx etc. These are the email files in compressed form. If you are lucky you might find the old ones tucked away somewhere. If inbox.dbx is only a hundred or so bytes, then I'm afraid there is nothing stored in it.
