Lost Data from file with icon on desktop

I have a file on which I keep details of the petrol I have bought and the mileage I have driven. It is shown as an icon on my desktop as well as in My Documents. When I opened it in Monday the page was blank and all the previous entries were missing. I have the information on an external drive. How can I transfer these files to my computer without erasing them from my external druce.

Change the name, of either one, and then "drag & drop"

If the one on your Hard Drive is Fuel.doc, which the copy on the external Drive will be the same. e.g Fuel.doc

Change the one in My Documents to "Fuel-old.doc"

Drag the external one into My Documents, so that they will display next to one-another and then compare the two

I have had another thought.

Is the icon on your desktop a shortcut to the file in My Documents.

If it is > delete it > go to the file in My Documents > create a new Shortcut > Drag that to the Desktop. Try it

Thank you for your help. Have managed to get it sorted. Took the computer to the local shop. Less than five minutes and everything was back to normal. He is very goodand charges are reasonable. Wanted to do it myself but couldn't manage it. Consider this now closed
