my crt has abruptly lost the red colour.
Any advice apart from getting a new monitor?

Basic thins first.
Turn off at the mains and check all the cables are fully connected.

Red gun not working. Time for a TFT.

Someone gave me a monitor with the red colour missing and I found that one of the connection pins of the cable was bent.
Straightened pin and everything back to normal.
Check the connection pins or try a different cable.

If the suggestion offered by Wak doesn't help, make certain that the problem isn't in the graphics card. Otherwise the fault is probably inside the monitor. The anode of the crt operates at about 20,000 volts or more, and this voltage can remain for some considerable time after switching off. Because of this it is VERY inadvisable for anyone without experience of working on this kind of equipment to open the case even with the power removed. With good 17" crt monitors available at about £80 it just isn't worth the risk.
