Loss of D drive

Whilst attempting to install patch to my Pinnacle 9 video editing programme the installation began to `run riot' and I had to cancel it. This resulted in the dreaded system crash and has left me with a non existant D drive. Very bravely I changed my CDROM to another manufacturer but no improvement. After removing drive via Device Manager Windows XP recognises the drive ( a Pioneer DVR 105) but claims it can not install as Driver may be corrupt on Network device may not be present (error code 39 ?) As this drive is my sole CD reading device I can not do a reinstall, my usual answer to any problem! The D drive is no longer shown in My Computer. How can I tell Windows XP that I have a D drive in order to do my fall back reinstall. BTW Reinstore has no effect no matter how far back I go.
